With automated transmission light microscopy it is state of the art to evaluate particulate matter (PM) collected on transparent adhesive film via passive samplers. The images gathered are being processed with particle segmentation algorithms and subsequent grouping and characterization of particle statistics and types.

Electron microscopy
Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) is a high-resolution imaging method well suited for particle analyses including the acquisition of qualitative or semi-quantitative chemical data.
